We can’t get the skilled workforce to sustain the services and that’s not just about money it’s about national shortages of key staff and about Lincolnshire not being an attractive place to work – the result is that we rely on expensive agency staff or have unfilled vacancies which puts a huge strain on existing staff.


  • Last year our hospitals spent £30m on agency staff because they couldn’t fill permanent posts
  • 27% of medical posts are vacant at Boston Pilgrim hospital, these are filled with locums and agency staff
  • We have a shortage of specialist children’s consultants (paediatricians), specialist children’s nurses, radiographers and A&E consultants as well as other core roles
  • In the east of the county 27% of our GPs and 29% of our practice nurses are over 55 years old and expected to retire in the next five years
